9th October 2010: Ashtead Colts v Hook Youth - Awarded to Ashtead Colts

Bookham Colts 'D' 1 v 5 Merstham 'B'

On the hunt for another win Merstham U10s ‘B’ seemed to need no geeing up for this match as offensively they came flying out of the blocks with crisp passing and good movement off the ball and it only took two minutes for Ben Ellis to open the scoring.  What a finish it was too as he showed great agility to guide a mid air volley across the goal from a cross from Josh Farrugia that was not quite head height, surely a contender for goal of the season. The attractive and expansive attacking play continued from Merstham but clearly at the expense of any ideas on defending, which for the entire first half was dreadful at best.  Merstham though were just too powerful going forward and just six minutes later Sam Gardiner slotted home another clinical finish after yet another flowing Merstham pass and move sequence. George Croucher who was hugely involved in bringing the ball out of defence with some strong running and dribbling, often beat a couple of players, before laying off some well timed passes to Josh Farrugia, Henry Jablonski and Sam Gardiner who were all having fine games as well.  With George Croucher as the catalyst the others all combined time after time with intricate passing which led to some superb crossing from the right that Bookham were a little fortunate not to concede further goals through this period. Alex Burgess who was moved into midfield showed what he can do often ghosting past his Bookham counterparts and triggering several long range shots that included some very near misses but that third goal remained elusive to Merstham for now. However, although Ben Ellis's initial goal was an individual piece of genius, Merstham’s third goal was a team masterpiece with everyone getting a touch of the ball before yet another series of one twos cut through the Bookham defence leading to a Sam Gardiner cross which this time was not left unpunished as Henry Jablonski and Alex Burgess came piling in on the far post with Alex Burgess getting the final shot across the line.

After a tiring and committed first half display from Ben Ellis on the left Ben was to take the gloves in the second half allowing first half keeper Declan Dennehy to play outfield and with some further shuffling on came George Holder and Ryan Walker who would make their impact on the game sooner rather than later. The second half followed the first half with Merstham fully on the attack and thanks to Alex Burgess back in his more familiar sweeper position Declan Dennehy who produced two of the best blocks in front of goal that you will see also tightened up the defence. It was the forward momentum from Merstham that dominated though and with eight minutes gone in the second half George Holder was to score his third goal in three games by turning in one of the barrage of Merstham corners. Not to be outdone Ryan Walker who also put in an exceptional performance with some great skills and shots almost, if not quite, pipped Ben Ellis to the goal of the match lashing in a well time volley from well outside the box leaving the Bookham keeper helplessly looking on. Bookham themselves pulled one back late on with a very good strike from distance leaving the final score 1 - 5.

Merstham 'B' 2 v 1 Reigate Priory 'B'

Following on from a great performance and result last week against the league leaders Redhill Town and with the newly qualified FA coach (congratulations John) expectations this week were high. Slow starts with strong second half performances have been the trade mark of Merstham this season so this week the lads were pulled together an hour before the match to see if they could be woken up before the kick off.

This seemed to work as the passing and movement that was seen in the second half of most matches this season was there from the start this week.  Josh Farrugia playing at centre midfield passed the ball with ease, Elliot Bennett was immense in breaking down the play and distributing from the back along with his defensive partner Alex Burgess.  Ben Ellis made several breaks from midfield and Sam Gardiner showed good movement leading the line as he has done in previous matches this season. Reigate were able to frustrate the Merstham attacks which showed fluency and pace for 15 minutes of the first half until Ryan Walker managed to slide a perfect pass through to Sam Gardiner who calmly slotted the ball away giving Merstham the lead.  For a change Declan Dennehy in the Merstham goal was remarkably quiet. The pressure and pattern of play continued for the most part with Merstham dominating the half and but for the now accustomed lapses of concentration from Merstham it was  mostly a comfortable half.

In the second half rather than Merstham getting stronger it was Reigate who came out on the offensive and managed to create a few chances which were dealt with by second half keeper Ben Ellis.  Henry Jablonski and George Holder made second half appearances and immediately made an impact on the game, again Henry taking the best throw-ins and corners and George Holder getting stuck into the tackling. With the second half well underway and honours about even in this period Reigate continued to create chances and eventually managed to equalise with a well placed shot to the right of Ben Ellis's goal. This seemed to reignite the pass and move football Merstham had shown for most of the game and slowly but surely they began to dominate possession and territory again.  Henry Jablonski worked well on the right and Josh Farrugia dominated the centre of the park again.  With six or so minutes until the end of the game it was this combination that led Henry Jablonski to break down the right and fizz a cross four yards from the Reigate goal where it was met by a diving George Holder to deflect in what turned out to be the winning goal.

Merstham must surely look to push on up the table from here converting these good performances to points.

Caterham Pumas 'A' 0 v 1 Merstham 'B'

Following on from a series of disappointing results that started way back before the Ice Age against Redhill and ended with a stunning performance against Reigate FC ‘B’ last week it was time for Merstham U10s ‘B’ to get their season back to winning ways. Without question the results during this period were not reflective of the drive commitment and desire of the players, with each and every one of the team leaving nothing on the pitch.  In many of these matches a draw at least was  deserved based on the number of chances, possession and territorial advantage that Merstham had with only some naive all round defending being their downfall. The play and quality of passing from Merstham has improved week on week and much credit has to be given to coach and Manager John Ellis, who to the parents delight holds extra training on a Sunday.  There is no doubt though, that the players have improved throughout the season thanks to the extra sessions held. During this period the man of the match award has been spread about with all the boys contributing but for a quick roll call the winners have been:

Redhill Town (9) v Merstham (2) - Alex Burgess
Merstham (1) v Reigate (4) FCB - Ryan Walker
Ashtead (4) v Merstham (1) - Sam Gardiner
Reigate (2) v Merstham (1) - Ben Ellis

So back to today's match and there was no doubt that today was all about turning the performance into a result.

From kick off Merstham were straight to it and applied great pressure on the Caterham goal with almost all the action taking place in the home teams half.  Shots began to rain down on the Caterham goal, the notable efforts just wide came from Ben Ellis and Sam Gardiner, and these were quickly followed Ryan Walker and Henry Jablonski who both hit the post.  Perhaps the closest chance came from George Holder who threw himself at a cross only to see the Caterham keeper fall in the way.  As the game got more and more compressed towards the Caterham goal there was less and less space for Merstham to play in.  But with Merstham pushing to get the opening goal there was plenty of space left behind. It was only from a solid and disciplined performance from Alex Burgess that Merstham's chances and pressure would have counted for nothing.  Two or three times Caterham broke from defence leaving Alex Burgess isolated, however, with some good positional play and well timed challenges kept Merstham unscathed. As the first half just passed the half way mark Henry Jablonski's radar had been fine turned and he slotted a very nicely placed right foot shot into the corner of the goal to give Merstham a well deserved lead into half time.

The second half kicked off in much the same way with every single Merstham player getting a shot away with the best strikes coming from Josh Farrugia. Again with space at a premium and Merstham putting in their worst passing performance probably for the season struggled to break down the competitive Pumas.  However, as the half grew on more of the familiar passing and moving came back with George Croucher, Sam Gardiner and Josh Farrugia combining well on the right and Ben Ellis and George Holder on the left. Again the chances were coming thick and fast with everyone having good chances to take the pressure off.  Elliot Bennett was unlucky twice, George Croucher hit a couple of good shots and Josh Farrugia went close several times more as did Sam Gardiner but neither hitting the target. At the back Alex Burgess remained disciplined and dealt with most problems and an unusually quiet (not verbally) Declan Dennehy made all the saves required. How the score remained at 0 - 1 was testament to Caterham Pumas collective defending but also Merstham's inability to hit the target.

Merstham 'B' 0 v 1 Horsley

Apologies to all for not getting a match report out last week (Merstham 0 v 1 Ashtead Colts) so I would like to mention that despite a disappointing performance overall a special mention should go to Ben Ellis who made at least one world class save when playing in goal in the first half and then came out to play on the wing with great effect and purpose to thoroughly deserve the Lad of the match award - well done.

Any way back to this week’s proceedings. After a sluggish start against Ashtead last week Merstham seemed a bit more with it this week and indeed had the better of the initial exchanges combining well and creating a good level of possession within the Horsley half. However, despite the possession, chances early on were hard to come by for Merstham and it was Horsley who created the clearer openings and but for sharper finishing could have had a two goal advantage after the first 12 minutes or so. This can be put down to at what best can be described as erratic defending by the boys in blue rather than Horsley imposing themselves on top. With Captain of the day Henry Jablonski taking goal kicks with a good level of success these ended up setting up some of the better Merstham attempts on goal and with Sam Gardiner and Ryan Walker running the right hand channel well the tide started to turn towards Merstham once more. Towards the end of the half Merstham won a free kick in a dangerous position, some quick thinking from George Holder saw him slip the ball to his left changing the angle for Henry Jablonski whose shot unfortunately went wide. So with both teams unable to trouble the scorers in the first half 0-0 it was.

The second half kicked off in much the same way as the first with Merstham creating all the flowing football but making silly defensive errors which put them under pressure and had to thank Declan Dennehy more than once for keeping them in the game and indeed later on in the half at full stretch got a strong hand onto a shot destined for the bottom corner pushing it on to the post and subsequent safety. What was to follow had been on the cards all day with another misunderstanding in the Merstham defence Horsley were gifted another golden opportunity and this time not even George Holder (who had already cleared one off the line) could save them 1-0 to Horsley. But the game was not all doom and gloom with Merstham showing as a team that they don't let their heads go down and played what must have been some of their best passing football to date. Alex Burgess and Elliot Bennett made their customary tackles in midfield allowing quick balls to be passed forward.  It was one of these situations that led to the move of the match as George Holder, Ryan Walker and Sam Gardiner interchanged and overlapped with each other with pace and purpose ripping through the Horsley defence (it almost looked like it had been taken straight off the training).  It was shame that the move could not be finished off for what would definitely have been a contender for goal of the season. With Horsley now dropping deeper under the mounting pressure Merstham continually rained the shots in on the Horsley goal with Ben Ellis and Ryan Walker firing in good efforts from distance and Elliot Bennett coming as close as anyone with a fine header. It ended up being too little too late but again not for the effort put in by the boys who should be pleased and proud of the way they always keep going and play creative passing football.  On this evidence the results will definitely turn around. Finally after several consistent performances it was George Holder who snuck off with the Lad of the Match Award for the second time this season.

West Byfleet Scorpions 3 v 2 Merstham 'B'

With the usual loyal support Merstham U10s ‘B’ were away to a physically imposing West Byfleet Scorpions team, and on what seemed like quite a large pitch coach John Ellis was pleased to see Alex Burgess turn out allowing for at least one Sub on which would be a physically demanding day, Alex clearly preferred a game of footy instead of a trip to Bournemouth!

The early exchanges were tight with both teams having some attacking moments but the majority of the play was taking place in midfield where Captain of the day Elliot Bennett stamped his authority on the game with some crucial tackles and clever passes which allowed Merstham to break every now and then as the Scorpions gradually started to control things and make more in roads into Merstham’s penalty box.  There first real effort was a long range shot after eight minutes that was destined for the bottom corner but for a full length dive and save from Ben Ellis, Ben Ellis made a few more important saves before the pressure told on the Merstham defence and the Scorpions took the lead. Declan Dennehy’s positional play again at Centre Back was very good as he mopped up many a Scorpion attack and it was from a Dennehy clearance that Merstham tried to hit back with a good effort from Sam Gardiner well saved by the Scorpions goal keeper, but, for the first half this was as close as Merstham could come to scoring.  The Scorpions continued to use their size to dominate and this seemed to upset the usual flowing style of Merstham so as the half progresses so did the pressure put on the Merstham defensive unit and after several more attempts by the Scorpions they eventually made the half time score 2 – 0.

As the second half kicked off Merstham began to get more into their regular stride of passing and moving which created more space for all players that, coupled with some excellent tackling from George Holder showed that Merstham could physically compete.  This spurred on Merstham who began to dominate both territory and possession, ironically though it was a rare break away from the Scorpions that ended up in second halves keeper hands Declan Dennehy to create Merstham’s first chance of the half.  With what has to be the move of the match Declan Dennehy through a quick ball out wide to Alex Burgess who’s first touch and pass quickly put Merstham on the offensive, Sam Gardiner who had made a good run down the line picked up the pass and used his pace to ghost past a Scorpion defender as the bye line approach he fired over a cross which was met with calmness by Ben Ellis who duly tucked it away putting Merstham on the score sheet.  The slick movement continued and it was Merstham’s turn to severely test the Scorpions resolve. With just shy of 20 minutes to go George Holder won another tackle in the midfield the ball broke to Sam Gardiner who slotted a through ball into the Scorpions penalty area where Ryan Walker used his pace and at full stretch got a foot to the ball and guided it into the goal 2-2. After that the sides were extremely evenly matched and it became a game of counter attacking football, Henry Jablonski clearing out most of the Scorpion attacks with well timed clearances which again put the pressure back on them.  With only a few minutes remaining it was one of these Jablonski clearances that broke through the entire Scorpions defence, Sam Gardiner latched onto the loose ball and raced clear of the defenders, having made it into the box he shot to left where the Scorpions goalkeeper made a fine save. Moments later with Merstham pressing on the Scorpions had one final break and managed to squeeze a good shot into the roof of the Merstham net and steel the points.

With last week’s Lad of the match shared between George Holder and Declan Dennehy, there was no need to choose this week which as fate would have it was a bit of luck as all the boys gave 100% and all contributed equally to what was a very exciting and tense match.

Merstham  'B' 4 v 2 Bookham Colts 'D'

Merstham's second league game was reduced to a six aside affair with Bookham Colts unable to field a full side causing coach John Ellis some selection issues on whom to leave out, but with a very flexible squad it was Ben Ellis who started in goal the fourth, but very capable, goalkeeper of the season whose positional play was excellent throughout the first half.

Again Merstham started brightly with the entire side seemingly up for the challenge and with the trademark crisp passing and good movement off the ball Merstham showed great team work to dominate both territory and possession from the outset. Ryan Walker controlled the early play in midfield creating plenty of chances which put Bookham Colts under pressure and were forced to concede a couple of corners.  From the first the Bookham Colts keeper could only parry the ball out to Declan Dennehy who hit a fantastic half volley into the bottom corner giving the opposing keeper no chance and Merstham a well deserved lead. The second was missed entirely by the Bookham Colts keeper and fell a yard from the line where Sam Gardiner turned it in from a tight angle with his left foot, a true poacher’s goal. With Declan Denney’s confidence high after his goal he grew into his new position, having previously played in goal, as the half moved on with good organisation of the back line and great positional play snuffing out any rare attacks from Bookham Colts that broke through the Merstham midfield. With Ryan Walker taking a breather it was George Holder who picked up the reigns in the midfield showing good passing skills and keeping the flowing football going, but more importantly making every tackle he went in for, a great first half performance. Both George Holder and Declan Dennehy had already laid a good claim to the man of the match award. The half continued with Merstham very much on top with George Croucher getting everywhere and creating problems for the Bookham Colts defence.  Merstham defenders Elliot Bennett and Henry Jablonski were getting shots in on goal in a dominant first half show.

With so much first half dominance Merstham seemed to switch off at the start of the second half and with sloppy play and a lack of concentration conceded a soft goal to let Bookham Colts back in the match, and although Merstham responded almost immediately with a well struck goal from the edge of the box by Sam Gardiner but the sloppy play from Merstham continued for the first ten minutes. This was highlighted by Bookham Colt’s second goal which was scored whilst the five Merstham outfield players completely neglected any defensive duties, all of which were not more than ten yards from the Bookham box.  This left three Bookham players free to run through and score again giving them some hope. This seemed to refocus Merstham who stepped it up a gear and put the game to rest with a good strike from Ryan Walker, who it has to be said gave the best goal celebration to date.  George Holder, Declan Dennehy and Alex Burgess continued to play well with George Holder desperate to get on the score sheet with three or four great efforts the best of which was a volley narrowly clearing the bar.

All in all a good performance by Merstham and a well deserved win.  Finally it was down to Coach John Ellis to name the man of the match and if team selection earlier was tough this was tougher with both Declan Dennehy and George Holder very much deserving.  Unable to decide the spoils were shared a good decision given the closeness of the call.

Merstham  'B' 0 v 7 AFC Ewell

Well Cup Day has been and gone, unfortunately Merstham U10s ‘B’ came up against a physically strong AFC Ewell team that plays in a league two tiers above them making this a particularly tough ask from the outset for the home side.

Despite the difference in size and experience Merstham started positively and managed to maintain a certain amount of possession. The game was pretty much end to end with AFC Ewell using their strength and size to latch on to long balls that bypassed the Merstham midfield.  Merstham on the other hand showed composure and more guile creating some nice passing patterns that led to a couple of chances, the most notable of which fell to Ryan Walker who's sharp turn and shot hit the post after 13 minutes.  With Merstham closing in on the rebound they were lucky not too take the lead.

Sam Gardiner, Ryan Walker and Ben Ellis showed signs that a good understanding was being built between them and played some nice one two's, however, as the half went on AFC Ewell began to dominate and test the Merstham defence - Henry Jablonski, Elliot Bennett, Alex Burgess and George Croucher coping admirably with increasing pressure. Declan Dennehy, as he was in the first game, looked solid and made some more very good saves as Ewell came closer to breaching the Merstham goal and indeed but for an amazing piece of defensive cover from George Croucher who athletically cleared the ball of the line on the 25 minute mark would have fell behind. So with half time fast approaching it looked like 0-0 at half time.  AFC Ewell had other ideas and in a mad five minutes had three attempts on goal all of which found the target, the quality of the goals were of a high standard with little Merstham could do to prevent them, with exception maybe of the headed goal resulting from a corner.

With the second half underway, George Croucher went between the sticks but could not stop the four second half strikes from AFC Ewell that made up the final score line of 0-7 throughout which Merstham kept on pushing and some good second half performances should be noted. George Holder was much more involved and made some excellent runs with the ball and also showed good distribution to his team mates finishing one move with a shot which was charged down. Alex Burgess played further up the pitch in the second half and he too had some twinkly runs beating several players each time again finding team mates with some good crisp passing.  Ryan Walker showed good leadership and organised the team well.  Elliot Bennett and Henry Jablonski stood firm in defence both making some excellent tackles at critical times, but it was Henry Jablonski who managed to scoop the man of match award by growing in confidence as the match went on and getting involved in almost every piece of action.

0-7 is a slightly harsh result and Merstham should take the positives out the game both individually and as a team.  Firstly as a team they worked their socks off and it’s fair to say that everyone gave 100%, secondly at times the passing was slick and crisp and generally deployed a more flowing style of football than their opponents (watch out Arsenal come the end of the season) a very good sign for their remaining league games.

Hook Youth 5 v 3 Merstham  'B'

It was with much disappointment that two of the Merstham players were not allowed to play today because the correct paper work was not in place and a less than charitable Hook side refused to allow the boys to play - well done to George Croucher and Ryan Walker for supporting the team anyway.

As they kicked off Merstham instantly got into their rhythm and began to attack.  Ben Ellis received the ball on left from the kick off and went on a scintillating run beating several players before striking the ball past the keeper from the edge of the box and into the goal opening the scoring in spectacular fashion. Merstham looked well organised and confident in possession and controlled the next seven or eight minutes of play with Alex Burgess and George Holder distributing the ball well. However, Hook were persistent and gradually started to come back into the game with some good moves of their own and it was only with some stout defending by Merstham and Elliot Bennett in particular that Hook were held at bay. Still under pressure Merstham were able to break from a sweeping pass from Alex Burgess and with some speed create a man advantage; whilst the passing was a little scrappy the ball eventually fell to Sam Gardiner who shot from just inside the box, the keeper could only parry the ball which went into the net to make it 2 - 0. With Hook making some substitutes and getting fresh legs on they were able to apply more pressure as the half went on and but for two marvellous saves from Declan Dennehy, (the first from a well struck drive where Declan Dennehy launched himself low too his right and with a strong right hand pushed the ball away.  The second he was quickly off his line to the feet of an attacker who was clean through and smothered both the ball and the opportunity for Hook to get back in the game). Declan continued to play well making several more impressive saves but eventually after 20 minutes Hook got their first goal followed by another two minutes later.

Hook started the second half, again with fresh legs, much the same as Merstham in the first and attacked from the kick off.  With a change in goal for Merstham as Ben Ellis went between the posts and whilst making some fine saves of his own he could do nothing with Hook’s third just two minutes after the restart, nor five minutes later when they got their fourth. Merstham regrouped and got back in the game with great effort and spirit being showed, the midfield began to get involved with George Holder winning the ball and getting it forward to Henry Jablonski who (Henry had been moved to striker) with a deft touch slipped the ball to Sam Gardiner who showed some pace to race past two defenders and slot the ball into the far corner.  Merstham continued to press and Henry Jablonski struck a couple of sweetly timed first time shots just past the post. Finally with so much pressing Merstham were caught on the break and Hook got their 5th and the final goal of the game.

It goes without saying had Merstham had all the resources of the squad available they could have pressed on to have won this game quite comfortably - WELL DONE BOYS a great effort from all.
